Since 1997, Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas has been working towards the mission of fostering healing for grieving children and youth, their families, and the community. As the sole provider in South Texas of grief support programs for children and young adults between the ages of 3 – 24, the Center believes that each person’s journey through grief is unique and therefore deserving of a distinctive approach to healing. The organization’s goal is to help children and their caregivers understand the depth of their grief, stabilize and preserve family relationships, and develop healthy coping skills after the death of a loved one.
From meager beginnings as a free peer support group serving 19 families, over twenty years later the Center serves more than 1,900 children and their families every year from across the South Texas community. This work is done through ongoing peer support groups, individual and family counseling, grief camps, and professional education and training programs.
In 2017, the Center expanded the organization’s grief support efforts to two additional site-based locations in Harlingen, Texas and in San Antonio’s Medical Center. That same year, the Center was selected as the premier organization in the Small to Mid-Size Nonprofit Category of San Antonio Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy and Nonprofit Awards. In 2018, the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas is honored to partner with the University of Texas at San Antonio to support families in the Floresville and Sutherland Springs community and will be opening up a new facility, Paloma Place, in July 2018.
