Goal Progress

NAACP Legal Defense Fund

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread, state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has always been transformative: to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. Working in four inter-related focus areas—Political Participation, Criminal Justice Reform, Economic Justice, and Education Equity— LDF seeks to:

  • Achieve full African American civic engagement and participation in the democratic process.
  • Diminish the role of race in the criminal justice system.
  • Increase fairness and African American participation in all aspects of economic life.
  • Afford greater access to racially integrated, high quality public education for students of color and eliminate racial disparities in education.

Thank you for visiting the Barbara C. Jordan Chapter ’s Black Law Students Association Team page!

We are excited to be participating and raising funds for Norton Rose Fulbright’s Run Against Racism, in partnership with the Run Houston Race Series University of Houston 10K/5K/1K.

Thurgood Marshall once said, "I wish I could say that racism and prejudice were only distant memories. We must dissent from the indifference. We must dissent from the apathy. We must dissent from the fear, the hatred and the mistrust … We must dissent because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better."

We invite you to support us as we carry on the legacy of Thurgood Marshall and the many legal activists that came before us in the fight against racism and bigotry. Naturally, we, Thurgood Marshall Law School students, bring our collective support behind the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF). LDF, America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice, was founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice and the namesake of our Law School, a historically black law school. Help us to raise awareness and funds for this cause and watch the positive ripple effect making a difference has in your life!

Join us in making a difference! We ask that you click the SPONSOR ME button on this page to contribute to the fight against racism. Any amount will make a difference: $5, $10, $25, $50, or other.
