Thanks for supporting COCI in making a difference.

Ironman Texas
 The Woodlands, TX
May 19, 2012

What is an Ironman?  Definition: a strong man of exceptional physical endurance. Many reading this may ask, what in the world possessed you to attempt to do one these events. I haven't even told my parents about it yet. So, let me tell you why.

Why?  I have been in triathlons off and on for several years since about 1997. I did one or two a year in between softball tournaments. I was pretty slow but enjoyed the challenge. My brother in law and sister got into competing and it prompted me to get more competitive. I bought a better bike, quit softball and a year from last August got a coach. Aaron Palaian - Onurleft. I started Tuesday track, eventually Wednesday spin started and I began to see within a year myself improve. I went from barely making the top 20 to a season of 5th - 13th place and that 13th place was hard to achieve due to I cannot run, yet, I say YET, under an 8:00 min pace. Aaron has changed my whole ability to compete in triathlons. After several Olympics I decided to attempt my first Half Ironman in Austin. Found a new love of long distance racing. I told myself I had no desire to ever compete in an Ironman that a half was plenty full of a challenge in itself. I happily competed in another half- Lonestar. Once again finished and no desire for a further distance. I was content, but not for long.

Last May I went to support my team, Onurleft in the Irnonman Texas. I was standing by my coach watching the piles of swimmers come in down the water way and wondering how in the world do you swim in that mess and saying to myself I cannot do that, are you kidding me 2.4 miles in the water plus I am a terrible swimmer. They were so jammed together and no room to move.  Watching  the people come out of the water overjoyed they had made it was such an incredible experience. I felt so much joy for them.

Then there was the bike in. OMG bold faced, italicized and underlined. WOW what a sight to watch them come into that long stretch after riding 112 miles. It was an amazing sight to see. The cheering crowd was so uplifting and family T-shirts created showing support of their racer.

The run, the last leg in this event - 26.2 miles. A marathon after all that, I asked myself. I set up cheer camp down in the team tent by the water and thought there is no way I can do this. A full marathon after all that. Cheering lasted well into the night till 9:00. Watching my team mates run by, the look of exhaustion on their faces, determination in their eyes and thoughts of finishing in their feet the kept on going was amazing to witness. At 9:00 I walked to the finish line to just see what it actually looked like. From a distance I could here- YOU ARE AN IRONMAN blaring over and over. The lights, the cheering, the tears in their eyes and joy on their faces hit me like a ton of bricks. I began to tear up for them. It was then, I said to myself... I want to be an IRONMAN and signed up the next day.

I chose this event to raise funds for COCI because the event and the kids mean so much to me. The kids  will be pushing me to finish. I will not let them down. Please help me help them with your donation- any amount makes a difference $50, $100 or other.

My name is Shauna Hall and I will be an IRONMAN this May!!!!
