The mission of Achilles Houston is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life.
We welcomes people of all disabilities, any age, with any level of fitness. We meet weekly to workout and all athletes are paired with an able-bodied volunteer for support. While we are mainly "runners" we encourage all types of sports to join us.
Achilles Houston is completely free for everyone. We will also cover all race fees and, when possible, transportation to races as well.
Achilles Houston is the local chapter of the larger non-profit, Achilles International, who has been serving those with disabilities around the world for almost 40 years.
Hi, I am Michael, a retired NASA engineer and blind athlete of Achilles International Houston. I have partnered with Achilles Houston to help train and guide me in undertaking my latest project. This project is a 4-day hiking trek along the classic Inca Trail to one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu, Peru (approximately 27 miles and scaling two nearly 14,000-foot mountain passes). I will be hiking with 2 guides from Achilles Houston and a guide from Colorado. The Trek is currently planned for June 2019 and is being hosted by Kandoo Adventures.
Ultimately, I want to document the larger story of my journey in the film "One Step at a Time." The goal of this documentary is to bring hope, inspiration and the joy of achievement to all through an impressive chronicle of determination and resiliency.
I have had several personal blind friends die much too early in their lives due to a compication of factors, including poor exercise and diet choices.
My hope is that this documentary will be seen by tens of thousands for years to come to empower the blind to live a healthier lifestyle through physical activities. Some of the activities I see the blind accomplishing after experiencing my documentary film include the following.
If you want to track my training, planning and progress, please follow my blog here: SeeNoBarriers.org
My three guides and I are paying all of our own expenses for this trek (travel, tour package, equipment, etc.). Funds received will go exclusively towards capturing, creating and distributing this film.
All donations are tax-deductible to Achilles International Houston, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
