My journey to Mayde Creek started as a 6th grader in 2002. I lived in the Mayde Creek Community the majority of my life, and now, as an adult, I have the honor of serving and teaching in the exact community and school system, I grew up in. The Mayde Creek community made me into who I am today, and I am now thankful to pass on the lessons taught to me with students in our community.
Last year was my first time participating in Reason2Race. I had heard our Katy ISD Education Foundation leader speak on getting us to sign up and what a great cause we would be running for. Honestly, the majority of the information went through one ear and out the other and I did not initially sign up. Finally, with a week left before the race I decided to participate in the 5K run. With no training, not a single mile ran within the last six months, or even an inclination that I would even finish, I ended up 1st in my age and gender. This special event sparked my interest in racing and competing. Since then I have completed five other races for a total 38 miles raced this year, with more to come.
The reason I am racing this year is not because of the success I've had running, or because of the competition aspect. When I learned of what Reasons2Race does for students and teachers in our district, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. Many of our students have the same economically disadvantages, I had growing up. Single parent homes, with parent(s) who work multiple jobs, but do the best they can for their children. I want our students to have a better advantage to become responsible members of society. I want our students to have the resources to compete on a level playing field when they join the work force. I want our students to know and believe they can achieve anything they put their minds to, work hard at, and never give up on. This community’s resilience has proven itself time and time again when devastated by natural disasters. I want that resilience to lead toward the successes of our students.
So please join my team, and donate to my community’s youth, as we invest in their future, and the future leaders of our community, like those who did before me. I am a product of this community and if you believe in someone like me, you can believe in every single student of Mayde Creek Junior High.
